String Theory Chamber Orchestra wins gold at KBB

Congratulations to our ‘String Theory’ Chamber Orchestra who won a Gold award in the Chamber Orchestra division of the KBB Music Festival and Competition held at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Parnell this weekend.

The group of 23 students was recognised for their programme of Locatelli, Bloch, Elgar and a World Premiere performance of David Hamilton’s ‘Meeting Place’ for Taonga Puoro, Harp and Strings.

In addition to a Gold award, they were awarded ‘Best Performance of a Baroque Work’ for their performance of Locatelli’s Concerto No. 12 for Four Violins and Strings.

The adjudicator commended the ensemble’s spirited feel, energetic playing, rhythmic drive and excellent attention to articulation that accurately captured the baroque style.

The KBB Music Festival showcases secondary school orchestras, concert bands and stage bands in Auckland. This year, nearly 4,000 students in 130 groups from 45 schools entered ensembles under four categories: Chamber Orchestras, Symphony Orchestras, Big Bands and Concert Bands.

The orchestra’s conductor, Julie Garner, praised the ensemble’s high level of commitment, ongoing pursuit of excellence and the excellent teamwork exhibited throughout the year.

She also said String Theory’s concertmaster, Year 13 student Michelle Yao, had proved an excellent leader since she stepped into the position. “She has continually modelled high expectations and exceptional motivation to the younger students.”
