“It is their school”: Student leaders take the reins

Our student leaders have been named and already they’re playing a key role in school life by leading the year’s first assembly.

Head prefects Cassidy Huang and Athan Ratnam spoke to staff and students about heart, commitment, integrity and opportunity; while deputy head prefects Manav Kaila and Emily Zeng talked about failure and character building, and individuality.

“This assembly was a little different because the student leaders want to be more involved in the school and share leadership with me,” said Principal Russell Brooke.

He said it was important in the modern world to encourage students to seize leadership opportunities and learn to deal with challenges that arise.

“I am very open and transparent with our student leaders, and they are the same. This is the time for them to learn, supported by a safety net of senior staff.”

The initiative to give students a greater voice in school management will also see the establishment of a student council.

“ACG Parnell College is their school and we want them to feel ownership and pride in our journey,” Mr Brooke said. “I will share what we are doing and students can be a voice in decision making and learn the complexities of leading a school.”
