Outstanding results from the NZ AIMS Games 2019

Attracting record-breaking numbers, the nationwide NZ AIMS Games 2019 saw more than 11,500 intermediate-aged athletes descend upon Tauranga last week. “The NZ AIMS Games is the pinnacle event in New Zealand for Intermediate students and so it was a great week seeing our students in action at such a big event” says ACG Parnell College Sports Coordinator, Steph Trowill.

“In 2018 only six ACG Parnell students attended the games across two sporting codes; this year we sent 23 across six codes. All 23 conducted themselves in a great manner and represented the school with pride.”

Athletes from ACG Parnell achieved some outstanding results, especially in the swimming events with Charlie Li winning individual bronze medals in 50m Butterfly, 100m Breaststroke and 200m Breaststroke, and Patrick Li winning bronze in the 50m Backstroke. And success in the pool didn’t end there, with the Boys Swimming team placing second overall in the competition.

“It was great to see our swimmers come away with four medals” Steph continues. “Charlie and Patrick have both had a great year swimming-wise up in Auckland, so achieving these medals at such a huge event is a great reward for all of their hard work this year.”

Our badminton players also took top honours with an all ACG Parnell final in Division 2. Jason Xie eventually won the match, while Nicholas Chen came away with the silver in this fiercely fought battle.

“Sport is an essential adjunct to our academic excellence. The majority of students in our school are involved in sport in some way and we are continuing to grow participation and develop sporting excellence” says ACG Parnell College Principal, Russell Brooke.

It was great to see the number of ACG Parnell athletes increase, and we are very proud of all who attended the games and competed with determination and wonderful sportsmanship.”

Running from the 8th to 13th September, the NZ AIMS Games offered a great opportunity for ACG Parnell students to compete on a national stage. Congratulations are also due to all of our coaches, managers and parents for their ongoing support and encouragement of our talented athletes.
