Daniel attends NZ Secondary Schools Symphony Orchestra

Congratulations to Year 11 student Daniel Kim who attended the 2019 New Zealand Secondary Schools Symphony Orchestra (NZSSSO) course, held in Christchurch from 22-27 April.

Daniel, a viola player, was selected last year after a rigorous audition process.

The orchestra, under renowned German conductor Uwe Grodd, performed Kabalevsky’s “Overture to ‘Colas Breugnon’, Op. 24”, Séjourné’s “Concerto for Marimba & String Orchestra”, and Mahler’s “Symphony No. 1”.

It was an inspiring week full of intensive rehearsals and making new friends across New Zealand. Daniel enjoyed the opportunity to play difficult and challenging repertoire, especially the full Mahler Symphony, and to work with Maestro Uwe Grodd.

The final performance on 27 April in the Charles Luney Auditorium was well received, and was a culmination of hard work and a strong passion for music by all.

Daniel said he will always treasure this experience, and is grateful to the organisers and his teacher, Veronica Kim, for giving him the chance to do so.
